Unit Outline

This unit takes a look at sustainability from multiple angles.  There are many ways in which one can sustain all that is good in the environment, but knowing how is key.  This unit starts out with looking at carbon footprints within our daily lives.  Students figure out what they can do around the house to conserve energy.  Students then look at the items that are in the classroom and find out just how far they have to travel to make it to their desks.  Carbon footprints deal a lot with the journey that a product has to make and an alternative to this would be buying local.  The next step in the unit is writing letters to other classrooms about carbon footprints and creating waste free lunches.  In the fourth lesson, students look at energy bills and find the pros and cons of using green power.  As a final assessment, students create an eco-friendly and green school from recycled materials.
